Tame the monkey inside you

The Monkey Mind is a well-known expression in the yogi world and you will hear it often with me as well. Originally this term comes from Buddhism "kapicitta" and means as much as "unsettled, restless, capricious, confused...". What exactly is meant by this is quite easily explained.

Our mind loves to move from one thought to the next. Just like a little monkey jumps tirelessly from branch to branch. He loves to swing constantly between past and future and thus causes a pure caos in our head. We get lost in memories we can't change, or futures we can't control. As a result, our attention suffers, we miss the here and now, become stressed, annoyed, anxious and full of sorrow and worry. This little monkey in us does what he wants. But we can easily put an end to it. With a little training, even the wildest monkey becomes a tamed cuddly toy.

6 tips to tame your monkey.

1. Breathe consciously and deeply
2. Use your senses to come fully into the present.
3. Minimize distractions and be present in everything you do.
4. Observe and journal about your thoughts.
5. Move, whether it is with yoga, sports or a walk.
6. Meditate, that's when the monkey learns to sit still on a branch.
